When
you march in a parade or for whatever reason that
you have to march, then make sure secure the drum on
your chest. Then, always make sure that it is the right
size for you wheather you are short, tall, fat, skinny...
whatever. Then, you need to make sure that it feels
comfortable so that you won't ache the next few days.
Finally, make sure that you lean forward while you are
carrying the drum... otherwise, if you lean back, you
will have back problams for about 2 months. Trust me...

Speed
is important, but dont neglect practicing slow.
It is much harder to keep time slow and you will become
rock solid when you master it. Try playing some of your
favorite beats and fills at different slow speeds. Not
only will they sound different and give you new ideas,
but it will help you to improve on your dynamics. Try
it for 2 months and you will see! By the way, ALWAYS
use a metronome! - Robert

Stress
happens to the best of us. we all have our problems,
but the worst thing for a drummer is to have too much
worries on the mind. clear your head before a gig, and
concentrate on the music. Even with practice with yor
band, or alone, your responsebility to the music is far
more important than anything that can help by just thinking
about it.Get it off your mind. It will ruin your vibe

As
a non-drummer (guiatar/bass player) 35 years, If you
want all the other members in the band to think you are
the best drummer they ever played with.....THROW YOUR
CYMBOLS AWAY, or at least learn to play them at a fraction
of the volume of your bass and snare...like you're suppose

Remember,
what you hear when you play
is not what the audience hears. example a overtone from
the snare drum is heard by the player not the audience.
the overtone may help to project the sound to the audience.
Cymbals by virtue of where they are played, are heard
louder by the player than the audience. adjustmements
should be made so the audience recieves a balanced mix
of the total drum sound. - John Beaster

Is your Bass Drum walking around on you during
the set? Here's what you do: When you set up the Bass
Drum, make sure the legs are pulled all the way out as
far as they will go, so the front of the Bass Drum is
lifted off of the ground. When you put your pedal on,
the Bass Drum should actually be suspended off of the
ground in between the legs and the pedal. This way, the
legs will keep it from sliding around, for the most part.
Also, you may want to try using a few sandbags in front
of your Kick if the problems persist, they can be obtained
relativley cheap, and will not damage the drum as a brick
would. Cheers! - Matt Faske

Ok,
I kinda adapted this one from Gene Hogla: I find that
most drummers in death/black/grind metal tend to use small
diameter, light sticks most of the time (The smallest
stick I will ever use is a 5A, and that's already pushing
it for me). For the last year, I have been warming up
with a far beefier stick (I use a 2B for this purpose)
on the first 3-4 songs of any set, and it has cut down
on my overall fatigue, as well as improved my speed considerably.
You can achieve the same effect by putting light ankle
weights on for double bass (that's the Gene Hoglan trick).

As you hit the high hat open and close the high hat

Drummers are the ones that go to lessons and toil laboriuosly

a rate of instructional absorption ! ...They will become
proficient and probably professional.. But But But!!!
the fast twitch drum athletes will be layin down the

Tips:
1. If you are playing a beat which you find easy (basic
rock beats for instance) using the ride cymbal instead
of the high-hat, funk things up a bit by adding in the
left foot on the high-hat pedal between beats (hope I've
explained that clearly enough).
2. Even if you've got a good acoustic kit, invest in a
good electronic kit as well - nowadays you can get them
with very convincing sounds. I own the Roland TD3 and
it has really accellerated my progress - it's small, quiet
except for the noises when you hit the pads, has 32 built-in
drum-kits and has some very real sounding drum noises
and authentic feel - you play it exactly the same as you
play an acoustic set.
3. Fast-playing is impressive and requires plenty of stamina,
but speed isn't everything - slow beats with complexity
can easily be just as cool by all means.
4. When playing in front of the ladies, play a bit of
ballistic metal as you do, but also throw in some boogy/disco
dancy stuff - it turns them on and you could end up pulling
(trust me, I'm a drummer). I mean, get the bass going
with your right foot and the high-hat with your left (right
left right left) and play stuff over the top on the toms
and what-have-you.
5. If you've got the ambition, keep giving it all you've
got and practice as much as possible.
And remember: Even if you don't make it big and famous,
as long as you enjoy drumming,
that's all that counts. That's what playing music is all
about no matter what instrument you play if you ask me
- putting on a show and having a ball! - Cowbell Cowboy!

Flashy
stick handling, I don't recommend playing live; however,
if you decide to go arial with a stick, make sure it is
in a part of the song that if it drops, you have time

If you play covers. I found the best way to learn
them is listen (thorougly) through a nice sounding stereo.
That way you can pinpoint all the accents and ostinatos.
Then put on good head phones into a cd player and play
along. Good way to develop precise timing as well. - Brandon

You
shouldn't use a fan. It can constric some muscles

bell on cymbol) These create different sounds that make

I've been playing for 6 months w/o lessons and
I've found drum tabs are EXTREMELY helpful if you dont
know how to read music yet. Make sure you stretch really
good in ur wrists and ur legs b/f you start. If your just
playing for fun, start playing slow songs you know befor
the faster ones. I dont know if it really helps you guys
out but it helps me a lot. Also try playing slow and then
speed it up later - maddmike

ok kids... hmm lets see... to improve speed i
found jogging and also standing on ur toes and do 50
calf raises a day can make u faster, and give u more
controll... to start out on dbble kick just play some
16th notes by playing one foot after another simontaniously
and play till u feel a burn.. then take a brake and
start again till the brun.. when u dont have a petal
handy just put on some heaver shooes and play on the
ground for that burn... and sooner or later ur let alot
faster... then start trying to incorperate dbble kick
in fills.. and start messing around with roudements
on ur petals like a paradittle.. RLRRLLRR***********,
and then in a groove start tring new patterns and there
ya go ur all set.. to check out some amazing dbble kick
drummers check out jordan manccino from as i lay dying,
vinnie paul from pantera and mike portnoy from dream
theater... if u want check out my band on myspace death
to the broken hearted.. kk later cool kids - Dr.

your toms: if your toms vibrate or resonate too
much, take the batter heads off (the heads you hit)

resonance. Take the resonant heads off (bottom heads)

Tedious
tapping! If you use a practice pad daily for a couple
of hours, like me, you may find that even though you are
hearing the sweet sound of progress being made, that sound
of wood meeting rubber may get a little old. To over come
this tedious tapping, I have found that using a cd player
and headphones helps greatly. My choice of warm-up music
mainly consists of melodies without a lot of rhythm, that
way you don't get destracted from what your doing.Try
some Mozart or Beethoven, this style of music also keeps
your practicing mind in a calm, relaxed state. Keep the
volume at a levle to where you can hear yourself playing
and the music equally. Hope this helps someone out there,
remember...stay loose! - chad safarik

Myth:
ringo is the best drummer fact joey jordison is pretty
dam good 2 - drummer
|
Do
not overlook the sticks in your hand. Music stores
sell a huge variety of sticks but people tend to overlook
the alternatives and just go ahead and purchase the same
old american hickory trianglular tipped sticks. Experiment
with different woods, sizes, lenghts, and most importantly,
tips. Too many drummers are oblivious to the fact that
there is more than one shape of tip aside from nylon and
wood triangular bead. Give the teardrop, reverse teardrop,
oval, piccolo, and round beads a chance...after all, the
tip of the stick is the thing that connects you to your
drums. - Jay =)

Bass
Drummers: FOCUS ON THE FULCRUM! Some of you may know
Teddy Holcomb, if you don't, then get educated. My high
school drumline and indoor ensemble were assisted by him
and a friend and former student of his. The main thing
with the basses was that the fulcrum is the essential
part of playing bass. If you don't focus on this important
part of thehands, then you have nothing. Also play through
the center of the drum, you will get a better sound and
it is easier playing. Remember these tips, and you can
do anything on the bass drum. Good luck and Be sure to
play hard and play right! - Die Hard Pearl Kid

Don't
spend extra money on drumsticks that have been 'dipped'.
go to home depot or lowe's home improvement and buy a
product called Plasti-Dip. it's liquid rubber & is
the EXACT same thing zildjian used to dip their sticks.
for $6, you can dip as many sticks as the can will allow.
it beats spending extra money on grip tape too. - scott
